Tournament guidelines

Tournament Overview

JBR’s Open Cup is the inaugural tournament of the JBR_AOE Discord and is marking the launch of this website. The tournament is intended for players of all levels with separate tournaments for different rating levels. All information relating to the tournament will be posted on here. Notifications about the tournament will be posted on the Discord. Players will use Discord to organise their matches with their opponents.

Timeline

  • Sign-ups opened on 29th June 2020, with provisional closing date of 19th July 2020 at 22:59 GMT.
  • Group stage from 20th July – 16th August.
  • Knock out round from 17th August – 6th September.

Format

Players have been split into 4 separate divisions based on their seeding. Each division will operate as a separate tournament. In each division, there will be a group stage followed by a knockout round.

The group stage will consist of groups of 4 players in a round robin format (meaning each player in the tournament will be guaranteed 3 matches). The top 2 players from each group will progress to a knock out round.

Players will be awarded 3 points for a victory and 0 points for a loss.

Games in the group stage will be a best of 3 format.

The top two players in each group will progress to a knockout stage. Placement within the group will be decided by points, head-to-head, win differential, then original seeding if still equal. In the event that three players are tied and have each beat one of the others, then the head-to-head is considered equal for all three players.

 

Games in the knockout stage will be a best of 5 with the final a best of 7.

Game 1 of each series will be on Arabia, with the losing player of each game choosing the next map. Maps cannot be repeated within a set.

Seeding

Players will be seeded based on their 1v1 rating. It will be calculated by using an average of their current and highest rating. A minimum of 10 ranked 1v1 ladder matches are required to be eligible, with at least one played in the last 28 days (exceptions may be made if the player is known to the mods – to ensure a fair understanding of which level they should be placed in).

Schedule

Players are required to schedule to play a minimum of 1 match per week while they are participating in the tournament. You are welcome to schedule your group games at any time, as long as they are finished by 23:59 GMT on 16th August 2020.

Players are to organise between themselves what time they are going to play each week. Players shall post their scheduled times in the relevant section of the Discord.

If a player fails to show up to a game within 30 minutes of the designated start time, it will result in an automatic loss.

Players need to post the result and recorded game files in the relevant section of the Discord after the games.

Map Pool

Game 1 will always be on Arabia. With subsequent games consisting of homemaps from the following map pool:

  • Acropolis
  • Arena
  • Budapest
  • Four Lakes
  • Hamburger
  • Hideout
  • Ravines
  • Steppe
  • Valley

Newer players are advised to test out all of the maps prior to their games as some of the maps have unusual elements.

Players in Men-at-Arms, Long Swordsmen and Two-Handed Swordsmen divisions, will select home maps at the start of your set of games so as not to impact civilization selection.

In Militia division, for the group stage, you will select your home maps when you schedule your matches. If you reach the knockout stage, this will revert to the system used in the other divisions.

The higher seed will select first (you can check this through your division’s page in the website).

The loser of each game then selects from any available home maps (meaning you can select your opponent’s home map first if you wish).

Civilization Rules

Civs are hidden picks, no repeat within sets. Civs can be used again in a different match of the tournament.

If a player picks a civilization they have previously used in that set then the game will be restarted with hidden pick deselected and choosing random civilization.

Game Rules

Players are forbidden from ‘laming’ an opponent’s boar with a Scout or Eagle Scout – this will result in an admin loss.

Players are not allowed to receive communication relating to an ongoing game. Stream sniping is also forbidden.

Players are not allowed to delete an opponent’s straggler trees, unless they are being used as part of a wall.

Bugged Maps

Restarts can only be called in the event of a bugged map.

Restarts must be called before 6 minutes in game time. 

It is the responsibility of the player to scout their map to determine when a map is bugged. A map is bugged when:

  • Less than 50% of the sides on a player-specific gold are accessible
  • Less than 50% of the sides on a player-specific stone are accessible
  • Less than 50% of the sides on a player-specific forage bushes are accessible
  • Any herdable or wild animal that belong to a player are trapped or inaccessible in anyway
  • Any player-controlled units are trapped or are in anyway inaccessible
  • Additionally, on Arena, if the player does not have a woodline accessible within their starting walls, the map will be considered bugged

Settings

When creating the lobby, select hidden civilizations, allow spectators and add a 1-minute spec delay.

A server should be agreed upon prior to the game to ensure it is reasonably balanced between the locations of the two players.

Streaming

Players are welcome and encouraged to stream any of the games in the tournament (either streaming their own POV or casting other games).

I would appreciate if players shared a link to the website as a command on their stream in order to continue building the community.
